Well today is the day! Yes, after a final meal of eggs and onion…… a full hobbit breakfast…….. some fried mushrooms…….. cooked carrots…….. shire spiced apple pie, washed down with a pint of Blagrove’s Brown…. and a quick nap, my beautiful daughter Rubyrae and myself decided to leave Bag End for the start of the legendary quest. Of course, we had to celebrate with a quick perfect pie to build up that last bit of energy first!
So we headed off. Rubyrae got a bit embarrased as I couldn’t resist firing a final verbal shot at the Sackville-Baggins duo. Hmmm I was certainly happy to leave them behind!
We left Hobbiton as secretely as we could, in the direction of Tookland. I noticed some young urchins having a bit of trouble at the Old Willow with bees and bears, so helped them out. I was rewarded with more eggs and onion, which was appreciated. The whole thing was however quite tiring.
Journeys end for the day was nestling up against a tree at 33.3s, 70.2 w on my map. This looks as near as I could find to the trees before Woody End, just east of Tuckborough where the company of three spent the first night. Rubyrae and myself were grateful to be joined by a passing stranger from Rivendell, and chatted long in to the night, with the occasional pause to lighten our hearts with a rousing chorus of “The road goes ever on and on”. A very content company of three we were!
